The Right to Repair
The Right to Repair
In the past when you would buy a washing machine or really any appliance it would come with a manual that would clearly show you how to repair the device. Today on the other hand is quite the opposite, there will be some basic troubleshooting instructions however if something goes wrong your expected to just purchase a new one. Any attempt in a repair will result in be quoted way over the cost of what the product is worth leading to people continue our mass consumption culture. I prime defender in the right to repair would be Louis Rossman, I personal enjoy his you tube channel where he repairs mac books. Louis featured in a recent video from CBC where they exposed Apples poor repair practices, I suggest checking it out.
Repairing Items are becoming a thing of the past even though they can be reused. Recently my washing machine broke down and the repair guy barely knew what he was doing and after 2 visits he came to the conclusion that it would cost 700$ to fix my 400$ washer. Companies are making the knowledge and the parts way to complicated to attain. Parts should not come with such a high markup that buying a new device is a better option
